I recently finished applying to college! Hooray! Let the “senioritis” begin. It was a long process and ultimately taking approximately 6 months to complete. With a sigh of relief, I can now relax a little.
One particular university I applied to had many supplemental questions that took the place of a traditional essay question. One of the supplements really stood out to me. The prompt was, “Give us your top ten list.” Super vague, right. I could have given them a bucket list, a list of my favorite foods, songs I like, etc. I chose to submit my top ten “things”. This includes any experiences, material items, feelings, activities, and more. I actually really enjoyed going through the process of answering this question. It allowed me to really search for and define the things I love most.
The following list is what I chose to submit to the college. I later added a little commentary after each item to talk to you all more about why I like each thing.
1. Fireworks on a clear night
The Fourth of July happens to be one of my favorite days of the year. To me, it means summer, warm weather, and juicy watermelon. Watching colorful explosions in the sky is always a magical experience, no matter how many times I’ve seen it. One of the best fireworks shows I’ve seen was a few years ago when my family and I were on vacation in Orlando, FL. We all sat out on the balcony of our hotel room with take-out pizza and watched the fireworks from all the different theme parks. All across the horizon, we saw pops of color and light burst into the sky. I could have sat out there all night watching the many amazing displays.
2. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee
If you know anything about me, you should know I LOVE coffee. Yes, I’ll admit, it is a bit of a problem. I just adore every part of it.
3. Traveling, as an avenue of learning and experience
I was raised to travel. My parents brought my siblings and me along with them everywhere they went. I was lucky enough to have experienced over 10 states and 4 countries by the time I was 16 years old. I am passionate about experiencing the world and all its unique cultures.
4. The finished product after a long day of baking
I find baking to be incredibly fun and stress-relieving. I love the fact that I can mix a bunch of ingredients together to make a delicious product. It’s especially rewarding to watch others enjoy something I created from scratch.
|The recipe for this cake was from Sally’s Backing Addiction.|
5. Random acts of kindness
It makes my heart so happy to witness human beings giving and receiving kindness. I truly love helping people and knowing that I can make someone’s day by simply giving them a compliment.
6. Time to myself
Selfishly, this is one of my favorite things. As humans, we need some time to be alone with our thoughts and refresh our minds. It’s so important for people to spend time by themselves in order to develop true confidence and contentment.
7. The endless string of cheese after the first bite of pizza
Pizza. I think that’s a good enough explanation for this one.
8. Serving others
I am so fortunate for all the amazing things, people, and opportunities in my life. Because of all of my privileges, I feel a huge responsibility to give back to my world. Community service is so important to me, and I would feel incomplete if I wasn’t doing my part to help others who are less fortunate.
9. Watching others laugh
Watching other human beings enjoying themselves is awesome. Their happiness just radiates from their smiles and transfers that happiness to me. My mom has always said, “Laughter is contagious.”
10. The sun when it dyes the sky an orange-red
This is appropriate considering I live on the west coast of Florida, and we are somehow blessed with the most beautiful sunsets. It’s hard to truly understand until you have seen one for yourself.
Leave a comment and let me know what your top ten list is! 🙂
